It’s a shame, but we’ve seen it too. Sadly, some of us have even been the hypocrites. Many Christians put on our game face when we go to church, but then we go about the rest of our lives, slightly ashamed of how we’re living.
It takes a lot of energy to live a pretend life. And when it’s all said and done, who was the show for anyway? We’re not fooling God, and given the bad reputation of Christians in our nation today, it doesn’t appear we’re fooling anyone else either.
It’s sad really, because the compulsion to perform – to put on the show - comes from a gut level belief that God doesn’t accept us the way we are, and this belief is perpetuated by the don’t ask, don’t tell culture in some churches.
Church should be where we go to heal, to be supported, and to be loved. Jesus himself rejected the religious leaders who looked like they had it all together. He chose instead, companionship with those who clearly didn’t.
At NRCC, we are learning to be real. We’re finding groups of friends with whom we can admit our struggles and demons. We’re finding that honest disclosure unburdens our souls, and that support, prayer, and the insight from our spiritual friends grows and heals our souls.
If you left the church because you prefer authentic sinners to inauthentic saints, consider NRCC. We’re far from perfect, but we might be the perfect place for you to find authentic spiritual friendships.
